Foods That Cause the Most Distracted Driving Accidents

Distracted driving leads to thousands of fatal accidents every year and sends hundreds of thousands of victims to hospitals in every state. There are many forms of distracted driving. In fact, one of the most common forms is texting and driving, which leads to serious and catastrophic accidents every year. However, there are other forms of distracted driving that commonly lead to accidents as well, such as eating while driving.

A study recently found that approximately 70% of drivers admit to eating while driving, even though it brings severe accidents in its wake. However, you may not have known that some foods are more dangerous to eat while driving than others.

Most Dangerous Foods to Eat While Driving

Eating while driving should be avoided no matter what due to the fact that it can cause serious accidents. Drivers are urged to pull over and take the time to eat so that they can lessen these accidents on our roads. However, some foods are known for causing more accidents each year in the U.S.

Chocolate: Chocolate is messy, which means that you will leave fingerprints all over the place when you eat it while driving. Your first reaction might be to clean the stains, which takes your focus from the roads. If a portion of food is especially messy, a driver will lose their attention on the roadways around them.

Soft Drinks: Many people put soft drinks in their cupholders every day. However, they are likely to spill out and even completely fall out when you are going around a turn. If you have to search the floorboard of your vehicle, you are engaging in a dangerous act that can put lives at risk.

Jelly Donuts: When you take a bite of a jelly donut, the jelly will almost always ooze out, making a huge mess. When you are forced to clean something, your attention is lost to others who share the roads. All messy foods should be avoided while driving.

Fried Chicken: Fried chicken is best enjoyed at home due to the fact that it is greasy and will leave you searching for napkins and wiping off your hands while you are supposed to keep your hands on the wheel.

Barbecue Foods: As with other messy foods, barbecue can create a huge mess that leads to distracted driving. You might think that keeping napkins closeby will help, but you have to remove your attention from the roads to search for them as well!

Hamburgers: Hamburgers are one of the most frequently eaten foods in vehicles. However, they are also one of the most dangerous and cause most accidents every year.

Tacos: When you are driving on a highway or you strike a pothole, a taco can fly right out of your hands and into your lap, leading to a huge mess that you might want to clean up while driving.

Coffee: Coffee is rated the most dangerous food item to have in your vehicle while you are driving. Piping hot coffee can land in your lap when it spills out of the cup, which can be dangerous in many ways.

Eating while driving is messy and dangerous. In fact, lives are taken each year due to these accidents. This is why they should always be avoided and you should eat at home or work.
