San Mateo, FL – Fatal Truck Crash at US-17 and Weerts Rd

San Mateo, FL (July 27, 2020) – Around 10:30 a.m. this morning, a fatal truck crash took place at an intersection in San Mateo.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision happened in the southbound lanes of US-17 at the Weerts Road intersection.

Officers confirmed that a sedan was parked on the grassy shoulder of US-17 while a tractor-trailer was traveling south. The truck suddenly veered off the side of the road for unknown reasons, where it struck the rear of the sedan.

The driver of the sedan was identified as a 49-year-old woman from Palatka, who was tragically pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the truck was identified as a 65-year-old man from Orange City. He was not injured.

The right lane of traffic on US-17 was blocked for several hours following the accident. Police worked diligently to clear the scene.

No further details have been released but the investigation is ongoing at this time.
