Pedestrians are injured and even killed in Florida every year due to the negligence of drivers who fail to watch out for these vulnerable parties. In 2015 alone, it was reported that approximately 129,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms within the entire U.S. due to these serious accidents. Facts show us that children are some of the most vulnerable people and are more likely to be injured in pedestrian accidents.

Yes, some parties are more at risk when it comes to pedestrian accidents. For instance, older adults pose risks because they might not be able to see traffic as well on our roads, or might cross the road slowly, which makes them more difficult to see than others. Children are also some of the most vulnerable parties on our roadways. In fact, statistics show that in 2016, one in every five children under 15 killed in accidents was a pedestrian at the time of the collision.

By understanding the risks of children and our roads, we can attempt to reduce the number of children who are injured in these accidents every year. This includes talking to children about the risks and paying attention as a driver on our roads.

Why Children Should Understand Road Dangers

Children are some of the best candidates for learning about road safety because they have the largest risks on our roadways. Young children do not yet have the skills to understand how our roads work, which means that they cannot usually cross a street as safely as other parties. They tend to be impulsive, which means that they might run out on the road unexpectedly if they are chasing something or somebody across a street. On top of that, children are easily distracted and will not watch what is happening around them, so drivers are always supposed to watch out for them.

How to Avoid Child Pedestrian Accidents

Slowing Down: A way to avoid striking any pedestrians on our roadways is by slowing down in pedestrian areas. When you see a pedestrian or you are in an area where you believe it is more likely to see pedestrians, you should always slow down so that you have time to react to any situation. Pedestrians can make themselves appear in a second, which can put children at risk. This is why you should always be prepared.

Be Patient with Children: Children need some time to navigate our roads and might not understand the risks, which is why you should always remain patient when one is crossing the street. Always give them enough room to cross.

Observe School Zones: Children in school zones will not always see vehicles around them. When there are commands to slow down, listen to them.
